Van Bronckhorst wants to round off phase with a win
Giovanni van Bronckhorst has set his side a clear objective for the weekend. The second block of league fixtures ends in Doetinchem on Sunday and the Feyenoord coach wants his men to return to Rotterdam with three points. On paper it looks like a reasonable ask, bearing in mind opponents De Graafschap are bottom of the Eredivisie. ‘But that doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy for us on Sunday,’ warned the coach.
‘Everyone in our team has to be on their game in this match if we want to get a good result,’ Van Bronkhorst continued, in the regular meet the press event at De Kuip after Friday morning training. ‘If that is not the case, it could easily become a very tough afternoon. We obviously want to win the last match before the approaching international break. It would be a real shame if we were to drop points.’
Feyenoord are in confident mood ahead of the trip to De Vijverberg stadium after two fine home wins against PEC Zwolle. Van Bronckhorst now wants to see his side put a marker down away from De Kuip. ‘Up till now the results away from home have not quite been as good as they have been at home,’ the coach explained. Feyenoord only managed a point at Roda JC and were beaten at PSV. ‘We have to perform as well in away matches as we do at home.’
It remains uncertain whether Van Bronckhorst will be able to name an unchanged team for Sunday’s match. Rick Karsdorp is the main doubt. A groin problem forced the right back to retire early from squad training on Friday. ‘We hope Rick makes it. He is an important player in this team and his partnership with Dirk Kuyt is improving all the time. We will take a decision on his availability after the final training session on Saturday,’ said the coach, who named Bart Nieuwkoop as one of the options should Karsdorp be ruled out.
