Feyenoord do good spot of business in Enschede
Feyenoord made it four Eredivisie wins in succession in Enschede on Sunday. The visitors recorded a 3-1 victory against FC Twente at the Grolsch Veste stadium to strengthen their grip on fourth place. Jean-Paul Boëtius, Steven Berghuis and Nicolai Jørgensen scored the goals.
Head coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst impressed upon his players before the match that they could expect a tough afternoon at bottom-placed FC Twente. That was quickly confirmed, with the hosts’ striker Tom Boere earning himself a yellow card after nine seconds for a foul on Jan-Arie van der Heijden.
Feyenoord were happy to give as much as they got, though. The visitors picked up two yellow cards of their own in the opening period. Steven Berghuis and Jan-Arie van der Heijden both had their names taken, with Berghuis automatically ruled out of next week’s league fixture against FC Utrecht as a result.
The opening goal came on 18 minutes. Moving inside from the right, Jens Toornstra played the ball into Nicolai Jørgensen. When the Dane failed to control it properly, Toornstra got himself on the ball again. After a quick give and take with Jørgensen, he chipped the ball into Jean-Paul Boëtius, who finished with precision to give his side the lead.
The visitors were unable to protect their advantage for long. On 24 minutes, Adam Maher intercepted a pass from keeper Brad Jones and slid the ball into the empty net. But, backed by a full away section, Feyenoord did not allow themselves to be distracted. The visitors went close on a couple of occasions before the break. First through a Toornstra free kick, then through a long cross from left back Ridgeciano Haps, which Boëtius missed by a whisker.
Feyenoord eventually regained the lead 20 minutes into the second half. By that time Robin van Persie and Sam Larsson were both on in attack. Steven Berghuis played a one-two with Karim El Ahmadi before finding the net with a fine shot that clipped the inside of the post on its way in.
Berghuis on 14 strikes
Goal number 14 of the season for Berghuis was no more than Feyenoord deserved. Jørgensen might have edged the visitors ahead a minute earlier, but he was unable to apply the desired finish to Toornstra’s slide-rule cross. The Dane’s effort sailed over FC Twente keeper Joël Drommel’s bar, but he didn’t have to wait too long to add to his own tally for the season.
With a quarter-hour left on the clock, Jørgensen rounded off a fine move to make it 3-1. Berghuis started it, passing to Van Persie, who gave it back to the winger. Berghuis laid the ball off to El Ahmadi, who poked it to Jørgensen. The Dane finished with a back-heel.
The three points leaves Feyenoord five points ahead of chasers FC Utrecht, who could only manage a 3-3 against ADO Den Haag, with four to play. FC Twente remain rooted to the bottom of the table.
