Van Bronckhorst looking to continue good run against AZ
Feyenoord can look forward to some attractive fixtures over the next few weeks in both league and cup. Head coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst is concentrating on Sunday’s Eredivisie match against AZ at De Kuip, but he did admit to knowing what is coming up. ‘It’s a great prospect,’ said the coach at his weekly press conference on Friday afternoon. ‘These are opportunities to measure yourself as a team to see where we are. Our full focus is now on AZ, who are a good team.’
Van Bronckhorst’s team are joint top of the league after nine rounds, after last weekend’s convincing win at sc Heerenveen. The coach was pleased with his side’s display at the Abe Lenstra Stadium, especially in the first half. ‘The next step we have to take is to maintain our good performance throughout the match,’ he said. ‘We are on a good run, which we want to continue on Sunday.’
The coach looked ahead to the match against AZ before taking his squad for a training session on Friday afternoon. While Sunday’s opponents AZ took on FC Augsburg in the Europa League on Thursday night, Feyenoord have had no such distraction in the run up to the weekend. ‘It’s a plus side to missing out on European football, but I would rather have played those international fixtures. We saw last season how fast the players and the club can develop.’
During training Van Bronckhorst will keep an extra eye on Rick Karsdorp. The right wing back has missed recent matches with groin problems and his availability against AZ is still touch and go.
The club reached an agreement in principle with Karsdorp earlier this week on a contract extension until the summer of 2020, something Van Bronckhorst is very happy with. ‘It’s good for Rick and good for Feyenoord. I’m happy with the progress he is making and how committed he is to that himself. A player from our own youth academy who is set to sign a long contract extension – of course that’s great.’
