Clasie: ‘Stock up on confidence against FC Dordrecht’
For Feyenoord there’s more at stake in Thursday evening’s cup tie against FC Dordrecht than simply a place in the third round. While the most important thing is securing the right result, Ronald Koeman’s men also hope to play better than they have done in recent weeks. ‘We’ll hopefully be able to stock up to confidence,’ says midfielder Jordy Clasie ahead of the match.
Clasie made reference to last Sunday’s home game against FC Utrecht, which Feyenoord won 1-0 but failed to put in a good performance. ‘A good win against FC Dordrecht might just get us back on track,’ says Clasie. ‘Hopefully we’ll be able to take it to the next level against FC Dordrecht in terms of performance, so we can continue our improvement next Sunday against ADO Den Haag in the league.’
The midfielder certainly does not expect an easy game against Thursday’s second-tier opponents. ‘FC Dordrecht are period champions for a reason. Their trainer has already said that he wants to play an attacking, pressing game against us. Dordrecht have nothing to lose, whereas we have to win. The pressure is on us. We have to perform.’
‘Often it’s tough to play against clubs from the second tier or the top amateur division,’ Clasie continues. ‘If we win 2-0, people think it’s only to be expected; the same is true if we win 4-0. Whereas a draw or a loss is seen as disgraceful. That’s how football works and it’s only logical. With that in mind, we have to go all out as a team against Dordrecht and put a lot of pressure on them from the front.’
Clasie hopes that Feyenoord can be serious cup contenders this season, after quarterfinal elimination last season at the hands of PSV. ‘The cup is important to us, of course. That goes for every piece of silverware we are up for. We haven’t won anything in recent years, so everyone is keen to change that this season.’
