Feyenoord beaten at home by PSV
Feyenoord failed to complete a home double against PSV at De Kuip on Sunday afternoon. The league leaders avenged Feyenoord’s TOTO KNVB Cup quarterfinal win at the end of January by recording a 3-1 victory to cement their place at the top of the table.
With Eric Botteghin, Tyrell Malacia, Sofyan Amrabat and Jens Toornstra in the starting lineup, Feyenoord had no answer to PSV’s blistering start. The visitors created the pick of the chances in the first half. Steven Bergwijn, Gastón Pereiro and Santiago Arias had all tried their luck, shooting over, before PSV finally took the lead on 24 minutes.
Bergwijn picked the ball up from a corner, curling it in towards the goal. It fell to Arias, who headed home. Ten minutes later Bergwijn turned executor to double the lead. He bested Bart Nieuwkoop for speed before beating Feyenoord keeper Brad Jones with his shot, which went in off the post.
Botteghin prevented even worse damage on 41 minutes. The central defender, who started for the first time since 23 September last year after Sven van Beek was ruled out with a knee injury, scooped Bergwijn’s effort off the line.
The PSV left winger almost made it three anyway on 53 minutes, only to see his effort whisk wide. Jones was quick to start and his alacrity was a big factor in Feyenoord racing down the other end to cut the deficit. Malacia picked up the keeper’s clearance and made ground down the left. The left back found Jean-Paul Boëtius, who had come off the bench to replace Steven Berghuis. His cross was met by Tonny Vilhena, who headed back the other way and in.
The packed De Kuip celebrated but the home fans soon saw PSV bite back. Five minutes later Gastón Pereiro was well positioned to tap in a rebound to make it 3-1.
Vilhena, Boëtius and Toornstra tried to bring Feyenoord within a single goal again with long-distance drives, but were unable to find a way through. Nicolai Jørgensen went closest, but the Dane was ruled offside when Vilhena played the ball to him.
The defeat leaves Feyenoord 11 points behind third placed AZ in the Eredivisie after 25 matches.
