Feyenoord secure cup semi with hard-fought win
Feyenoord beat PSV in the quarterfinal of the TOTO KNVB Cup on Wednesday evening. Head coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side were too strong for PSV, running out 2-0 winners to secure a semi-final berth. Sam Larsson and Tonny Vilhena scored the goals, both in the first half, with Feyenoord working hard after the break to protect their lead.
Feyenoord got off to a dream start against the Eredivisie leaders at a packed De Kuip. The opening goal came in the first attack of the match. After a fine one-two with Nicolai Jørgensen, Steven Berghuis was foiled by Jeroen Zoet. Sam Larsson was quickest to react, netting from the rebound.
The early lead forced PSV to come out and play, which resulted in an exciting, open match. The visitors created good chances for Hirving Lozano and Jorrit Hendrix, but both fired wide, as Brad Jones watched on.
Feyenoord were much more efficient, doubling their lead from a half-chance ten minutes before the break. The ball fell to Tonny Vilhena in the wake of a corner and his shot was reflected off the leg of Santiago Arias to leave Zoet helpless. Vilhena responded to his goal by sprinting to the bench and celebrating with the whole squad.
The hosts remained focused until half time, but PSV came back strongly at the start of the second half. Within ten minutes Jones had scrambled into action to keep out a Gaston Peirero shot, then Lozano shot wide.
It looked for all the world as though Feyenoord had confirmed the victory on the hour, when Jørgensen scored with a handsome chip. The crowd had already celebrated the goal and PSV were waiting to kick off again when referee Pol van Boekel ruled the goal out after consulting with the video referee.
It was a setback for Feyenoord, but the hosts regrouped as PSV tried to ratchet up the pressure. Feyenoord’s focus and discipline left the visitors living off scraps. Eric Botteghin bolstered the home defence in the final stages, the Brazilian returning to first team action for the first time since 23 September 2017 after a nasty knee injury.
Feyenoord kept their composure and concentration to the final whistle, which confirmed their advancement to the semi-final stage of the TOTO KNVB Cup to be held at the end of February. The draw takes place on Thursday evening.
