Final test for fit Feyenoord
Feyenoord are ready to take the final test ahead of the third qualifying round of the Champions League. A week before Besiktas arrive at De Kuip, Feyenoord complete their preparations with the visit of Real Sociedad. An important match, admits Fred Rutten. ‘We want to present ourselves to the fans,’ the head coach says. ‘And obviously this match is very important bearing in mind our European ties.
Rutten will be able to call upon virtually a full squad against the Spaniards. Joris Mathijsen is back in contention after recovering from an injury. Khalid Boulahrouz is also available against the Basque outfit. The defender has trained with his new teammates for a week now, but Rutten is yet to use him in a friendly. That means that Boulahrouz could make his unofficial Feyenoord debut on Wednesday.
Jordy Clasie and Terence Kongolo might also join the squad on Wednesday too. ‘We’ll only know that for sure on Wednesday morning,’ says Rutten. If they do, Rutten will check whether they will be given some time on the pitch against Real Sociedad in the evening. Stefan de Vrij is set to return later this week and is therefore not available.
Rutten sees Wednesday’s match as a serious test for his side ahead of the two-legged tie against the Turks. The coach is looking to start against the Basques the same way he wants to play in the Champions League qualifier. ‘We have had a strange preseason so far, and we’ve had to improvise a lot. The main thing was that the players we had available to us had to get fit and we can be satisfied in that regard. This team has a certain way of playing, based on last season. So we won’t suddenly be mixing everything up.’
