Feyenoord look forward after costly lesson

The repercussions of Feyenoord’s elimination from the Europe League at the play-off stage were still being calculated in and around De Kuip the day after the night before. But for coach Ronald Koeman’s squad there was no time to dwell on the defeat to Kuban Krasnodar. They completed a light training session at the Varkenoord academy complex on Friday morning to stretch their legs after yesterday’s game, before turning their attentions to Sunday’s home match against Roda JC Kerkrade.

Feyenoord look forward after costly lesson

Looking at the weekend fixture, Feyenoord can at least take confidence from how they started the playoff defeat on Thursday. Backed by some highly vocal support from the fervent home fans, Feyenoord were able to put their Russian opponents under heavy pressure from the kick-off. Pressure that led first to an early penalty and a goal not long after.

In the end, of course, Feyenoord came up short, and Koeman is fully aware that the failure was due to his side not taking their chances. ‘Ultimately that’s what it’s all about at this level,’ the head coach explained shortly after the game. ‘Kuban managed to score two goals from two or three chances. We had four or five chances and scored once. That’s the difference.’

Miquel Nelom, who made his second start in consecutive matches on Thursday night, does not feel that European elimination will inevitably dint confidence when Feyenoord return to Eredivisie action on Sunday. ‘We have not started so well in the league, but we have been getting into our game more and more in recent weeks,’ he feels. ‘We are growing as a team and playing our own game more and more. We have to build on that.’

Jordy Clasie was missing from Friday morning’s short session. The midfielder was substituted with a hamstring problem early in the second half against Kuban Krasnodar. It’s unclear whether the young international will be available against Roda JC Kerkrade. Elvis Manu will certainly be available to make his first appearance of the season after serving out a four-match suspension.
