Feyenoord round off 2017 with a win
Feyenoord wrapped up the first part of the season by easing to three points against Roda JC Kerkrade on Christmas Eve. Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side won 5-1 at De Kuip. Two goals in four minutes from Nicolai Jørgensen and Jens Toornstra gave the hosts a great platform. Second half strikes from Jørgensen again and Steven Berghuis (2) secured the points, with Simon Gustafson replying for the visitors.
Feyenoord got off to the best possible start with a goal after 45 seconds. The hosts have scored early in quite a few matches this season, but Nicolai Jørgensen’s strike was the quickest yet. The Danes scored with a shot from a Steven Berghuis cross, via a wonderful back-heel by Sam Larsson.
Larsson claimed another assist within three minutes. Jens Toornstra netted at the far post with a hard shot after Berghuis had missed Larsson’s cross. It was the quickest 2-0 lead of the Eredivisie season and the fastest Feyenoord had raced to a 2-0 lead since 22 December 1985. The opponents on that occasion were Heracles in Almelo.
Feyenoord continued to press, breaking fast to put the visitors under the cosh. Hidde Jurjus was constantly under pressure in the Road JC goal, but the hosts were unable to extend their lead before the break. Tonny Vilhena missed a couple of good chances and Berghuis had little luck with either a strong shot or a header from close in.
That profligacy in front of goal came back to haunt Feyenoord five minutes into the second half. Simon Gustafson gave his parent club something to chew on by halving their lead.
Jørgensen retired Feyenoord’s two-goal lead within six minutes – Vilhena claimed the assist – but the hosts were finding it hard to regain the fluency that characterised their first-half display.
In the end the hosts filled their boots anyway, Berghuis striking twice late on with assists for Jørgensen and Larsson. The win will give Feyenoord a lift ahead of the winter break, with everything to play for in 2018.
