Van Bronckhorst points out need to work hard to regain confidence
Two home matches in four days are an excellent opportunity for Feyenoord to get back into the groove after picking up just a single point in the last four Eredivisie matches. The Rotterdammers have lost a lot of ground on the top two over that time, which has dented confidence ahead of the visit of SC Heerenveen on Thursday evening. ‘At training I see a team that is going all out, it’s just that we don’t see the confidence reflected in the results,’ said Giovanni van Bronckhorst at Wednesday’s pre-match press conference at De Kuip. ‘It’s important to get that confidence back. To do so we need to work hard, but also to get points.’
Van Bronckhorst has reviewed footage from the AZ match with his training staff and squad over the past few days and he has come to the conclusion that Feyenoord have to learn from the defeat in Alkmaar. ‘We gave our opponents too much space, which was due to our structure. I saw a compact Feyenoord against PSV, but not against AZ. The way we played was not how we trained and what we had agreed on. Obviously I’m critical of myself with regard to that.’
‘Against AZ I saw a team that wanted to win at any price, but we didn’t use our heads, Van Bronkhorst continued. ‘But it’s precisely in this type of match that we have to keep our structure. It’s been a hard lesson for me and my players. Our structure has to be our foundation.’
Feyenoord will be wanting to rinse away the bitter taste left after the loss to AZ with a string of much better results over the coming matches. The home fixtures against Heerenveen and ADO Den Haag are followed by a midweek cup tie at Roda JC, so there is plenty of incentive to improve. ‘We now first have to win twice,’ said Van Bronckhorst. ‘You’re coming out of a run of one point from four matches, which has been disappointing for everyone, including the fans. But I hope and I believe that the crowd will be behind us against Heerenveen, as they always are.’
Van Bronckhorst will not be able to call upon Eric Botteghin on Thursday. The defender is not yet fit enough to play. New keeper Pär Hansson will not be in the squad either.
