Van Bronckhorst: ‘Last two matches something to hold on to’

The cup win at Roda JC Kerkrade gave Feyenoord grounds for optimism, as did parts of the performance in Amsterdam against Ajax. That was the opinion expressed by Giovanni van Bronckhorst at the press conference at De Kuip on Friday afternoon ahead of Sunday’s away match at PEC Zwolle. ‘In both matches we were more compact than in the previous weeks,’ said the coach. ‘We gave little away, we were solid as a team. In that regard the last two matches give us something to hold on to.’

Van Bronckhorst’s squad has experienced some physical discomfort in recent days, but Friday saw a full complement of players in training save Warner Hahn, who has a long-term injury. Over the past few training sessions the coach has seen that his players are fully prepared to help each other through what is a tough period from a sporting point of view. ‘They have trained hard,’ said Van Bronckhorst. ‘Players can help each other by working hard. That is what they are doing. The boys are getting one another ready for Sunday’s match, which is great to see.’

The coach used Eljero Elia as an example of how the squad is doing everything it can to turn the tide. The forward has not been playing at his best, but has shown his determination to regain the good form he was in at the start of the season. ‘Eljero thinks he can and should do better himself. We’re helping him to do that, among other things with extra individual sessions. He is showing improvement in training, he’s working hard towards that. Eljero is the type of footballer who can regain his form very quickly.’

The recent league defeats have left Feyenoord out of the race for the title. ‘If you want to be champions you have to perform well over the whole season,’ said Van Bronckhorst. ‘We haven’t done that, but in third place and the KNVB Cup there is still a lot of to play for. Last season we had some great experience playing European football. We have to perform if we want to get to do that again next season.’
