Group is eager, says Van Bronckhorst

During Friday afternoon’s preview of Feyenoord’s away game at SC Cambuur Giovanni van Bronckhorst was asked whether he was to be envied. The head coach has some big decisions to make with respect to his starting eleven, given that he has a virtually full squad of fit players to choose from. ‘That’s only nice for me as the coach,’ answered Van Bronckhorst, who also said that he is very satisfied with the squad he has. ‘The standard is improving all the time.’

One player Van Bronckhorst is certainly delighted with is Eric Botteghin, who joined the club on Thursday. The coach welcomed the Brazilian to training for the first time on Friday morning. A little later at De Kuip he explained why he is so happy to have him. ‘Eric is a good defender with lots of experience, a welcome addition to our squad,’ said Van Bronckhorst, who could call on Botteghin on Sunday if desired. ‘He is fit and has completed a full preseason, so we don’t need to get him up to speed.’

Botteghin’s arrival has increased Van Bronckhorst’s defensive options, which were also boosted by the news that Rick Karsdorp is available for selection against SC Cambuur. The right back was sent off against FC Utrecht but the KNVB’s disciplinary committee overturned the red card and corresponding three-match ban on Friday. ‘It’s a huge relief,’ said Van Bronckhorst. ‘For him and for us too, of course. It is very positive in my view that the KNVB has taken this decision.’

The coach also said that Botteghin is virtually the last piece in the puzzle in terms of his squad. Van Bronckhorst certainly has plenty of options. ‘We want to get Feyenoord to the top and for that you need a squad that is so strong that everyone has a claim to play. The squad is now well balanced; there is competition in almost every position. As a result, I see the standard at training increase all the time. Plus this group is very eager.’

In Leeuwarden Van Bronckhorst hopes his side can consolidate last week’s good start. ‘The way we took three points against FC Utrecht with ten men breeds a lot of confidence. Especially in the final phase I saw a great deal of spirit in the team. We need that attitude on Sunday too if we are to win.’
