Feyenoord confident ahead of Tilburg trip

The big news at De Kuip on Friday was the return of Dirk Kuyt at the beginning of next season, but Fred Rutten was focusing on more pressing matters. Feyenoord travel to Willem II on Sunday in the quest for another three points as they look to cement their place in the Eredivisie top three. The coach feels his squad is in good shape going into the weekend after last week’s win against AZ. ‘There’s a lot of confidence in the group,’ said Rutten during his regular Friday press conference.

“It’s now down to us to keep on winning and to wrap up third place as soon as possible”

That squad is in buoyant mood after a string of good results in recent weeks. The 4-1 win in Alkmaar was the fourth victory on the bounce in a run that also saw runaway league leaders PSV put to the sword. Rutten especially enjoyed that win against AZ. ‘The good feeling that game gave us has hung all week here. It’s now down to us to keep on winning and to wrap up third place as soon as possible.’

If the games against PSV and AZ revealed anything, it’s that Feyenoord are not tiring as the season moves towards its climax. Fred Rutten’s team has looked fresh and eager lately, which suggests they still have much to give in the final five matches. The coach also has virtually a full squad to choose from. ‘I’m not surprised that we have almost everyone on board at this stage of the season,’ said Rutten.

Not surprising perhaps, but certainly welcome. Particularly as Rutten anticipates a hard Sunday afternoon in Tilburg.. ‘I expect opponents who will want to grab us by the throat, especially in the early stages. Our job is to deal with that as well as we can and to play our own game.’

Rutten is unsure whether he will be able to call upon Joris Mathijsen and Khalid Boulahrouz for the game. Neither is fully fit.
