Good rehearsal for Feyenoord in Tilburg
Feyenoord racked up an impressive win on Wednesday night in Tilburg ahead of Sunday’s TOTO KNVB Cup final against AZ. Willem II were beaten 5-1 at the King Willem II Stadium. Dylan Vente (2), Sofyan Amrabat, Tonny Vilhena and Bilal Basaçikoglu scored Feyenoord’s goals to secure the three points that guarantee the Rotterdammers European football next season.
The hosts could have taken an early lead in the match through Thom Haye, but from then on it was all one-way traffic in the direction of Willem II keeper Timon Wellenreuther. Jens Toornstra, who was added to a much-changed starting line-up after Steven Berghuis was stood down at the last moment, was a constant thorn in the home side’s right side.
It was no surprise that Toornstra claimed the assist when Feyenoord edged in front on 28 minutes. He judged his low cross perfectly, allowing Dylan Vente to meet it at the back post to shoot past Wellenreuther. The young Dutchman, who was starting his fourth Eredivisie match, with Nicolai Jørgensen on the bench, doubled his tally for the season with the strike. The 18-year-old has shown he can make goals too, racking up two assists to go with his two goals in those four appearances.
Toornstra himself has ten assists to his name and he could have added another a few minutes later. Renato Tapia and Bilal Basaçikoglu just failed to connect with his cross. Every high ball into the box was worrying the home crowd, and they had plenty to be concerned about as the Feyenoord fans in the packed away section saw Basaçikoglu, Renato Tapia and Diks all miss good chances before the break.
First Eredivisie goal
The goals flowed more freely after the turnaround, Sofyan Amrabat doubled Feyenoord’s lead on 51 minutes with a thumping shot that hit both posts before crossing the line. It was the 21-year-old’s first Eredivisie goal of his career. The game was little more than five minutes older when his midfield teammate Tonny Vilhena grabbed his eleventh of the season. He scored with a measured drive from Kevin Diks’s cross.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst brought on Tyrell Malacia and Emil Hansson for Ridgeciano Haps and Toornstra as his side went in search of more goals. Ultimately, though, the next goal came at the other end. Substitute Bartholomew Ogbeche pulled one back for the hosts by getting his head full on a corner,
Feyenoord were strung into action. Vente was in just the right place on 86 minute’s to score from a Basaçikoglu cross and Basaçikoglu claimed a goal for himself deep into time added on to make it 5-1.
The three points took Feyenoord out of reach of fifth place FC Utrecht to guarantee a place in the second qualifying round of next season’s Europa League. On Sunday, Feyenoord can crown the season with a trophy in the TOTO KNVB Cup final against AZ at De Kuip.
