Feyenoord ease to victory against Twente at De Kuip
Feyenoord continued their good start to the season with a second win in two Eredivisie matches on Sunday afternoon. The Rotterdammers were too strong for FC Twente at De Kuip, winning 2-0. Jens Toornstra opened the scoring midway through the first half, with Nicolai Jorgensen grabbing the second ten minutes before the end.
If fans arrived at the first home match of the season expecting to see their side waltz over the opposition from kick off like they did last week at Groningen they were to be disappointed. FC Twente proved tougher to break down in the early stages, not least because Feyenoord were unable to inject any tempo into their play.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst decided that not changing a winning team was the best policy after that Groningen demolition. It meant that Eljero Elia started the match despite suffering from a shoulder problem earlier in the week. But while Elia excelled in the season opener, he found it harder to get into the game in front of his home fans. Unfortunately, the same applied to a number of his teammates and Feyenoord were nowhere as fluid as they were the previous week.
That said, the hosts were certainly extremely efficient. The first time Feyenoord got their passing in order and penetrated into the Twente penalty area they managed to come away with a goal. Nicolai Jørgensen shielded the ball well before laying it off to Karim El Ahmadi. His shot was blocked, but the ball fell to the feet of Jens Toornstra, who rifled it into the top of the net on 23 minutes.
That was about it as regards goalmouth action in the first half, save a fine volley from Lucas Woudenberg. But the hosts rectified the entertainment deficit after the break, threatening Nick Marsman’s goal on a string of occasions early doors. Within ten minutes of the restart Dirk Kuyt, Rick Karsdorp, Jørgensen, Toornstra and Elia all has attempts, though they were unable to extend their side’s lead.
Coach Van Bronckhorst will have been happy with some slick passing moves, but he felt he needed to add something to the mix not long after the hour mark. Dirk Kuyt went off, replaced by Steven Berghuis, who came on to make his De Kuip bow. His was the second home debut of the afternoon after keeper Brad Jones. Berghuis took up position on the right side of attack, with Toornstra moving in behind main striker Jørgensen. With a quarter of an hour left to play Elia was also substituted, making way for Bilal Basaçikoglu.
Twente had a great chance to level not long after, when Yaw Yeboah pulled a shot wide of the post. An equaliser would have been very much against the run of play.
Berghuis had a wonderful opportunity to double Feyenoord’s lead with just over ten minutes left, but saw his effort blocked. The hosts did wrap up the win a few moments later, though. Jørgensen turned his man on the edge of the box and hammered the ball into the net off the inside of the post. That confirmed the destination of the three points, pushing Feyenoord up to joint top of the table with two wins from two.
