Kuyt hits ton against Roda JC in 1-1 draw
Feyenoord ended their losing run against Roda JC Kerkrade on Sunday afternoon, drawing 1-1 at De Kuip. Dirk Kuyt scored his hundredth goal for the club in competitive fixtures at the end of the first half, but the visitors grabbed an equaliser midway through the second half to secure a point.
Dirk Kuyt started behind main striker Michiel Kramer against the Kerkrade side, which was probably Van Bronckhorst’s biggest change from recent weeks. The coach’s new adviser Dick Advocaat watched from the stand as the hosts played in a powerful midfield formation behind Kuyt, comprising Karim El Ahmadi and Renato Tapia, who made his home debut.
After seven consecutive Eredivisie defeats Van Bronckhorst went for defensive solidity and the choice seemed to pay off, as Kenneth Vermeer was untroubled in the first half. That was due not only to Feyenoord’s strong bonds at the back but also the hunger with which the hosts went to work to secure the ball when not in possession.
Feyenoord were less exciting going forward in the early stages. Van Bronkhorst set his side up to take full advantage of the speed of Eljero Elia and Bilal Basaçikoglu on the flanks, but that only really occurred fleetingly. Elia, in particular, did look a threat on the ball, but the hosts failed to create any big chances.
Feyenoord did manage to go in at the break a goal to the good, though. The goal came right at the death, courtesy of Kuyt. The skipper had already tried his luck against Benjamin van Leer a couple of times when he firmly headed in from Basaçikoglu’s free kick to grab the lead. His hundredth goal for the club could not have come at a better time.
Yet despite the lead Feyenoord looked a little shaky after the break. The defensive solidity had suddenly dissipated and the visitors started to look dangerous themselves. A warning came on the hour, when Rydell Poepon found himself with only Vermeer to beat, but blazed over.
The leveller came just twee minutes later. Feyenoord appeared to be caught out by a quick throw-in and when a Roda JC player whipped in a cross substitute Maecky Nggohbo was able to slot in from close range.
The goal winded Feyenoord and although the hosts regrouped and put pressure on the visitors, they were unable to break through a solid Roda back line.
Elia came closest in injury time, but his effort hit the bar. Ultimately the sides ended all square. That ended Feyenoord’s miserable losing run, but not totally in the way the hosts would have liked.
