Feyenoord make smooth progress in the cup
Feyenoord advanced to the second round of the KNVB Cup on Thursday evening without expending too much effort. Head coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst saw his side overpower amateur outfit VV Gemert in a 4-0 win. Dylan Vente grabbed three goals with debutant Orkun Kökcü also getting on the scoresheet.
Fast opening goal
Van Bronckhorst made wholesale changes against the Hoofdklasse side, with ten new faces compared with the team that went toe to toe with FC Utrecht in the Eredivisie. In spite of the reshuffle, the Feyenoord fans soon had something to cheer at the SolarUnie Stadium in Helmond. Vente finished from close in on 11 minutes after a fine piece of play by Mo El Hankouri, the visitor’s most dangerous man before the break.
Impressive bow by Kökcü
One of Van Bronckhorst’s introductions was Orkun Kökcü, who made his Feyenoord first team debut. And the 18-year-old midfielder celebrated his first appearance with a fine goal. With the first 45 minutes almost up, he curled a right-footed shot into the top corner from outside the penalty area to make it 2-0.
The second half started slowly and there was little to note until Vente grabbed the bull by the horns. The striker’s second goal was the pick of the bunch. Foiled not once but twice when trying to float in a cross, the youngster ripped off a shot that flew into the far corner. Vente completed his hat-trick with the final 20 minutes already ticking down, sliding his effort under the keeper’s body. Gemert tried to snatch a consolation but Feyenoord protected their clean sheet resolutely.
Draw on Saturday
All told, it was a comfortable evening in North Brabant for Feyenoord, allowing a large number of players to get a match under their belts. The draw for the second round of the KNVB Cup will take place on Saturday evening.
