Feyenoord go down late on in Venlo
Feyenoord were unable to follow up the midweek cup win against PSV with another victory in the Eredivisie on Sunday. Head coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side were beaten by VVV-Venlo, who scored a late penalty to claim all the points.
Van Bronckhorst started with the same starting eleven that beat the league leaders on Wednesday, hoping that his side would be able to reproduce the fervour shown them. That did not happen, however, as the visitors found it hard to break down the hosts, who often got eleven players behind the ball.
The biggest chance for the opening goal before the break came from the foot of Karim El Ahmadi, who tested VVV keeper Lars Unnerstall with a hard drive from distance late in the half. By that time, Steven Berghuis had also gone close on a couple of occasions with shots that went wide.
VVV made it difficult for the visitors, but also threatened themselves on the odd occasion. Brad Jones was not put under too much pressure to deny Lennart Thy and Clint Leeman. But Karim El Ahmadi did give the keeper a fright with a defensive intervention that almost went awry.
After the break, Feyenoord started more brightly on the artificial surface at De Koel stadium. Berghuis, Jens Toornstra, Nicolai Jørgensen and El Ahmadi all had efforts, but the visitors were unable to create a compelling opportunity. The hosts were more than happy to have a go themselves, though. The result was two big chances with 20 left on the clock for Vito van Crooy, who first shot over, then saw his effort saved by Jones.
Backed by 550 travelling fans, Feyenoord tried to break home hearts in the final 15 minutes and secure all three points. They did so with Robin van Persie on the pitch for Jørgensen. It was Van Bronckhorst’s second substitution of the match, with Jean-Paul Boetius coming on for Sam Larsson earlier.
The hunt for a goal left gaps at the back and VVV exployited that space with a few minutes left. When Romeo Castelen broke through Renato Tapia brought him down to give away a penalty. Clint Leemans converted to win the match and deny Feyenoord vital points.
