Feyenoord target first win of 2013

Feyenoord go into Sunday’s match at Willem II still looking for their maiden victory of the new year. After a loss and a draw in the league against Ajax (0-3) and FC Twente (0-0), Ronald Koeman’s side were eliminated from the cup at the quarterfinal stage on Wednesday, going down 1-2 at PSV. ‘We quickly shifted focus to coming Sunday after that game,’ said Koeman on Friday. ‘When you consider the opponents and the circumstances in recent games, it can happen that you don’t win any of the last games, but you have to break that cycle with a win. In that respect, Sunday’s game is crucial.’

Koeman analysed the PSV loss in various ways with his squad on Thursday and Friday. The coach is hoping his side will learn from their mistakes in that game. ‘Obviously we did have seven lads aged twenty or younger,’ he said. ‘It’s only logical that you are found lacking in a number of areas against a team like PSV. On the other hand, age has nothing to do with who you have to mark at a corner. We would like to take the next step in our development quickly, but we do have to realise where we are coming from.’

During the press conference Koeman revealed that Kelvin Leerdam has been given a few days off, after the midfielder’s transfer to Vitesse broke down on deadline day. ‘The group had said goodbye to Kelvin and wished him all the best in the morning. But at the last moment it proved impossible to complete the move. That was first and foremost very painful for Kelvin. He was in bits about it; it’s his future after all. That’s why we decided to give him a few days off.’

It’s still uncertain whether Koeman will be able to call upon Ruben Schaken on Sunday. The striker returned to action against Ajax after a groin injury, but didn’t come out of the game unscathed. Schaken then set himself the target of returning against Willem II but he is a doubt because of illness. Daryl Janmaat, who missed the trip to Eindhoven because of a heavy cold, returned to training on Friday. ‘We will see which players are a hundred per cent fit tomorrow and decide then on Sunday’s match-day squad,’ said Koeman.’
