Feyenoord started well, fired by an obvious desire to put the record straight after last week’s loss at Ajax. In Amsterdam, Ronald Koeman’s side faded after the first five minutes but at De Kuip they managed to maintain a good standard for most of the opening half.
It was a clear signal to the coach that his men had learned some valuable lessons during the week. Koeman had stressed the need to work hard as a team against FC Twente and Feyenoord certainly did that. As a result, the visitors were unable to create anything of note in the first 45 minutes.
Feyenoord on the other hand regularly put their guests under pressure. Although it did not lead to the breakthrough before the break, it was not for the want of trying. Feyenoord were thwarted by both bad luck and the skills of keeper Nikolay Mihaylov, who was having a great game. The biggest chance of the half fell to Lex Immers on the quarter hour. The midfielder let rip, but the keeper managed to get his body in the way.
The chance was the culmination of one of Feyenoord’s strongest phases in a first half in which spent much of their time on the back front. The hosts made good use of their wingers Jean-Paul Boëtius and Anass Achahbar, who was in as a replacement for Ruben Schaken.
The nimble-footed Achahbar looked good on the right, giving his marker Robbert Schilder a difficult afternoon. The forward showed his class as early as the tenth minute when he slid a sneaky ball through to Graziano Pellè, who couldn’t get his shot on target
Feyenoord were unable to continue in the same vein after the break, partly as a result of a tactical change by visiting coach Steve McClaren. FC Twente started to drop back whenever they lost the ball, which made it difficult for Feyenoord to create space in front of goal. It also meant that the visitors had a lot of space to run into on the counterattack.
One such occasion came just after the hour mark and Wout Brama really should have scored after Dusan Tadic’s shot rebounded to him close in. it was a let off for the hosts
Ten minutes before time FC Twente against went close to snatching the win, this time from a corner, but the ball was cleared off the line by Jordy Clasie. It was the last big chance of a game that was short on goals but brimming with incident and tension. Feyenoord – FC Twente 0-0 Referee:
