Koeman feels his squad is making headway

Ronald Koeman took two main lessons from the last home game against Roda JC Kerkrade. First, going forward he saw his Feyenoord side play as well as it has this season, with optimal use of striker Graziano Pellè’s qualities. Second, the two visitors’ goals – both of them from a corner – were clearly preventable. ‘So we’ve worked on that this past week,’ explained Koeman on Friday afternoon ahead of Sunday’s visit of Willem II.

The coach has previously pointed up the fact that Feyenoord are giving away far too many sloppy goals from dead-ball situations this season. Koeman has had a short video of defensive blunders put together hoping that the gag reel will help his team tighten up. ‘It’s about keeping your concentration and being aware of the situation. It all starts with good organisation and doing your job. We really have to deal with dead-ball situations better, especially when you consider our defence is full of internationals.’
On the other hand Koeman is satisfied with his side’s attacking prowess, which is improving all the time as the players get used to each other. ‘We are making better and better use of Pellè,’ confirmed the coach. ‘He was involved in every goal last week. Other players are benefitting from him too. For instance, Lex Immers often gets into scoring range and we are increasingly putting early balls in from the wings.’
Koeman is hopeful last week’s five-goal showing against Roda JC is a sign of things to come and that his side will pick up a lot of points over the coming period. ‘We did that in November and December last year as well. It’s clear the team is growing now. Individual players are also hitting form, like Jordy Clasie and Stefan de Vrij. And we have a fit group that really looks as though they are up for it.’
At the same time the coach is aware of the danger of underestimating the Eredivisie’s bottom-placed side. ‘Willem II were 2-0 up at PSV in the first half an hour. The biggest challenge for us on Sunday is putting in a good performance and continuing our good form of recent weeks.’
Probable team: Lamprou; Janmaat, De Vrij, Mathijsen, Martins Indi; Clasie, Immers, Vilhena; Verhoek, Pellè and Schaken.
