Feyenoord comfortably beat ten-man Roda JC

Feyenoord recorded a convincing win at De Kuip on Sunday as Roda JC Kerkrade finished the game with ten men. The visitors were a reasonable match for the hosts in the first half, but Ronald Koeman saw his team ease ahead after the break to win 5-2 after Bart Biemans was red-carded. Graziano Pellè was Feyenoord’s most valuable player, grabbing two goals and making a third. Lex Immers, Jordy Clasie and Daryl Janmaat also got their names on the score-sheet.

Feyenoord went in at the break in the knowledge that they had been extremely efficient going forward in the opening 45 minutes, but lacklustre in defence. For the first time since late March (against NAC Breda) Feyenoord scored three before half time, but they also conceded two.

The sting of those conceded strikes was all the more biting because they both came from a corner. Coach Koeman has stressed the need to tighten up at set pieces in recent weeks, but Roda JC exploited the weakness twice from four corners. There were about 12 minutes gone when Sanharib Malki was left unmarked to nod in the first. Five minutes later Biemans repeated the trick. Both goals were down to defensive failings.

Roda JC were scarcely a threat otherwise. Feyenoord dominated possession and were able to craft some good possibilities with some cutting passes. The first one of note came within 20 seconds of the kick-off. The target was Pellè, who turned his opponent on the edge of the box before rattling in a drive with his left that sailing into the top corner.

Pellè claimed his second midway through the first half. The Italian pulled away from his marker to slide in Ruben Schaken’s measured cross.

The hosts’ third about ten minutes later was virtually identical. Schaken was again the supplier. This time the recipient was Lex Immers, who only had to stick out his boot to deflect the ball past the keeper.

The home staff will have been pleased with their team’s edge up front, but concerned about the lack of concentration at the back. Feyenoord needed to go again in the second half and happily the most of the forwards still had their shooting boots on.

Roda JC defender Bart Biemans also played a central role. Ruben Schaken went through on goal, rounding keeper Filip Kurto, only for Biemans to collide with Lex Immers and touch the ball with his hand as he went to ground. Referee Braamhaar pointed to the spot and showed Biemans a red card.

Immers took the penalty, but failed to convert for the first time in his career. He even managed to put the rebound wide. In the end, Feyenoord grabbed the elusive fourth goal just a couple of minutes later. Jordy Clasie was played in by Pellè, walloping a convincing drive past the keeper and into the bottom corner.

Down a man and two goals Roda JC found themselves battling windmills. Defender Rob Wielaert was introduced for striker Krisztian Németh as the visitors looked to limit the damage, while Feyenoord went in search of more goals.

In the end they had to do with one more – a Janmaat drive after some fine combination play around a quarter of an hour from the end. There could have been more, but Immers spurned two big opportunities and a late Schaken strike was struck off for offside.
