The lack of a game has also given a number of players the chance to rest up and shake off a strain. Lex Immers, Kelvin Leerdam and Ronald Graafland were among the players who did not train fully during the week, but they are all fit enough to play at PSV, if selected. That means that Feyenoord travel to Eindhoven with virtually a full squad. ‘The group are in good shape,’ according to Koeman. ‘Our final training session is scheduled for tomorrow, but up to now we have been able to prepare well for Sunday’s match.’
Koeman has also noted that Sunday’s opponents PSV have had a more complicated week. The coach was in the stand last weekend to see PSV’s defeat in Utrecht and that was followed by a painful defeat in the Europa League on Thursday at Ukrainian outfit Dnipro. ‘PSV look vulnerable and clearly things are not going as they expected them to there. But they have much quality in their team that things can suddenly fall into place. And PSV are always very strong at home.’
While Koeman, as usual, was unwilling to say anything about his plans, he did admit to not expecting to change things up too much. ‘It’s important to get some continuity in the team over the coming time. We have a lot of new lads who have to get used to each other. Graziano Pellè is a good example. He keeps hold of the ball, which makes him different to what we are used to up front. A couple of the lads trained with him for the first time this week and you see that they immediately understand what he can do. By creating clarity we should be able to grow as a team over the coming time.’
Probable Feyenoord team: Lamprou; Janmaat, Martins Indi, Mathijsen, Nelom; Vormer, Immers, Clasie; Verhoek, Pellè, Schaken.
