No luck or reward at Vitesse

Feyenoord failed to take three points against Vitesse on Sunday despite controlling most of the game in Arnhem. Feyenoord were especially strong in the first half, but Ronald Koeman saw his side spurn a string of chances. Wilfried Bony made them pay with a goal for the home side in the last minute.

After started two matches with two in attack, Koeman opted to add a third in Arnhem Feyenoord were clearly bent on attacking at the to secure a second win of the season. Yet they started sluggishly in Arnhem.

The Rotterdammers created little more than a handful of chances before the break, as home keeper Piet Velthuizen enjoyed a peaceful first half.

Referee Kevin Blom was not helping matters. He might have given Feyenoord a penalty when Kelvin Leerdam was pulled down in the box and he could have given Guram Kashia more than yellow when he brought down Lex Immers when he'd broken through.

It meant that Feyenoord were limited to shots from Daryl Janmaat, celebrating his first call up to the Dutch squad, and Lex Immers. The former rolled wide; Velthuizen easily saved the latter.

Things went better for the visitors after the turnaround, and Velthuizen's goal was threatened on a number of occasions. Feyenoord showed a willingness to commit men to attack, creating some big chances. A Fernandez shot on the turn was the first. Ten minutes later Velthuizen had luck on his side when denying Immers from close range after Ruben Schaken had turned the defender inside out on the right.

Those chances were symbolic of Feyenoord's intentions after the break. The visitors were not interested in settling for a point, setting their sights on a breakthrough. Vitesse adopted a counter-attacking policy, which forced Feyenoord to stay alert to the quick break. Mulder kept his side on level terms with 15 left on the clock with excellent reactions when Jonathan Reis found himself free in front of goal.

Feyenoord were denied their just deserts because of sloppy finishing, especially in the 30 minutes or so after the hour mark. The biggest chance fell to Immers. He shot wide when a Schaken strike rebounded to him.

Feyenoord seemed to be happy with the point, but Vitesse had other ideas. The home side grabbed the lead completely against the run of play in the final minute. The Feyenoord defence had been solid throughout, but with the clock counting down, Bony converted his first chance of any real note, back-heeling the winner.
