Feyenoord left Arnhem with a point Sunday after a 1-1 draw at the Gelredome against Vitesse. The Rotterdammers started well and took an early lead through Roy Makaay, but the hosts came back in it as the game progressed. Paul Verhaegh ultimately brought Vitesse back on terms late in the second half. The game also marked Kevin Wattamaleo’s debut, as the youngster came off the bench near the end.
Feyenoord initially looked like having a comfortable afternoon in a sparsely filled Gelredome. The early goal by Makaay gave the Rotterdammers a flying start and Vitesse did not appear capable of putting up much of a fight.
Feyenoord took full advantage of some sloppy midfield play from Vitesse for that goal. Giovanni van Bronckhorst picked up a loose pass to send Makaay away on the left. The striker made for the edge of the box before driving in a controlled shot that Piet Velthuizen did not have a hope of stopping.
The visitors had chances to double their lead. A good piece of skill by Luigi Bruins did not get the finish it deserved from either Makaay or Leroy Fer. Then, after a quarter of an hour Makaay played a clever deep ball to Fer, but Velthuizen beat the youngster to the ball.
The home side took some hope from Feyenoord’s failure to extend their lead and gradually played themselves into the game. Santi Kolk and Nicky van Wolfswinkel both had major chances and it was only Henk Timmer that kept Feyenoord ahead going into the break.
Ten minutes before half time the keeper got some unexpected assistance with Kolk’s effort. Vitesse defender Frank van der Struijk got in the way of his team-mates shot on the line.
Timmer had enough to do in the second half to distinguish himself. Feyenoord were forced to cede the initiative to the hosts, who poured forward looking for an equaliser. When Van Wolfswinkel escaped the attention of the Feyenoord defence Timmer had to make a save. Not long after Claudemir tested Timmer again, this time with a hard drive. Timmer fisted the ball clear.
Feyenoord were unable to do much in return as Vitesse forced the pace. Exceptionally, Georginio Wijnaldum was dangerous, but he was unable to convert a Bruins cross.
Vitesse finally got on level terms with a quarter of an hour or so left. Paul Verhaegh provided a sweet finish after a fine one-two with substitute Niklas Tarvajärvi.
Tim de Cler was substituted due to injury late on and Wattamaleo replaced him to make his official debut for Feyenoord.
Fer had a great chance to secure all three points with five minutes left on the clock. Unfortunately, with just the keeper to beat the midfielder saw his effort saved by Velthuizen.
