Feyenoord eased past HHC Hardenberg 5-1 to reach the fourth round of the KNVB Cup Thursday. Debutants Kelvin Leerdam and Luis Pedro repaid Gertjan Verbeek’s confidence against the amateur side, with Pedro coming off the bench to score twice. Two goals by Roy Makaay and another by Kevin Hofland completed the win.

HHC showed how much they were willing to fight for a place in the next round as early as the first minute of the game. Bruins was brutally bodychecked in his own half by home skipper Gerard Kocks. The Hardenberg man escaped with a stiff talking to, whereas Bruins was soon forced to retire early. He was replaced by Pedro.

Feyenoord had a tough time of things in the early stages and the amateurs capped a dream start with a goal on 24 minutes. Michal Janota missed the ball completely on the edge of the box and Gerben Tieltjes exploited the young Pole’s mistake to rifle his side ahead.

The goal woke up Feyenoord, who were soon level. Pedro celebrated his first appearance in a Feyenoord shirt by finishing off a speedy counter attack orchestrated by Makaay. The Dutch international had already gone mighty close to equalising himself with a header by then.

Feyenoord had two major opportunities to go in at the break with the lead. The first fell to Georginio Wijnaldum, who failed to beat HHC keeper Marc Doornbos after latching onto a long ball down the right. Makaay missed the second, pulling a shot wide of the mark with the goal at his mercy.

The visitors effectively exploited the disparity in both condition and class after the turnaround though. HHC continued to play with enthusiasm, but individual superiority told in the end. Two goals in two minutes pushed Feyenoord to the brink of victory.

First Makaay put Feyenoord ahead with a tap-in from a Tim de Cler corner. A minute later Pedro made it three with his second of the evening. The striker dribbled into the penalty area on the right leaving Doornbos helpless with a shot in the near corner.

Tony Alberda looked to have brought the hosts back into the game not long after, but Timmer outfoxed the ex-pro in a one-on-one.

With a quarter of an hour left on the clock Makaay made no such mistake at the other end. Makaay took full advantage of a mix-up between defender Vincent Voshaar and keeper Doornbos to make it four.

Kevin Hofland even added a fifth from a free kick on the left in the final stages.

Janota thought he’d completed the half dozen when he netted at the death, but his goal from debutant Leerdam’s pass was rightly ruled out for offside.
