Feyenoord recorded a 4-3 win at PEC Zwolle on match day 28 in the Eredivisie on Sunday. No Eredivisie fixtures are schedule...
Gertjan Verbeek has had neither the time nor the inclination to wallow in the disappointment of Wednesday’s derby defeat at the hands of Sparta. The coach’s feeling is that what’s gone is gone. He’d rather focus minds on Sunday’s meeting in Kerkrade when Roda JC form the opposition.
For Verbeek that it is unproductive to ponder the situation for too long. The next match is already upon the squad and the coach feels the best way to flush out the negativity is a good performance and a victory. ‘The technical staff have to show the players the right way to go about things. We will have to focus on Sunday.’
Verbeek is able to draw on the same squad of players that he had for the Sparta game, as – rather exceptionally – no new injuries have been reported in the past couple of days. On the other hand, none of the injured players are ready to return at the weekend.
Theo Lucius is closest. If the defender comes through the final training sessions he will play in the reserves Monday night. If that goes well he may even be in the running for a place in the squad against CSKA Moscow in next Thursday’s Uefa Cup game between the clubs at De Kuip.
Verbeek gave his first-team regulars a day off Friday with the busy fixture list in mind. The players will train on Saturday afternoon before travelling down to Limburg the same day.
Feyenoord have taken maximum points in Kerkrade for the past four seasons, but current form suggests they will have to be in the right frame of mind to do it against this year. A win would be very welcome though as Feyenoord try to pull away from the wrong end of the table.
Roda JC have had a turbulent start to the Eredivisie season, which has led to the premature departure of coach Raymond Atteveld.
His assistant Martin Koopman took on Atteveld’s duties under protest and has had a varying return his first three games in charge.
A late Smárason strike cost Roda two points at home to sc Heerenveen in a match that ended 2-2. But a week later PSV were beaten 3-2 in Eindhoven. Koopman will have been looking to build on that, but AZ proved too strong at Parkstad Limburg Stadium Tuesday night, winning 2-0.
That said, the result was worse than the performance. Roda created a string of chances after conceding the opening strike and only lack the sharpness in front of goal against the new league leaders prevented them from repeating what they did to the reigning champions.
The Roda playing staff have publicly backed Koopman’s bid to become the new permanent coach and are burning to do well for him. Feyenoord will do well to heed the warning.
