Come half time coach Verbeek would have been satisfied with his side’s performance, but less enamoured of their finishing. Feyenoord basically kept Excelsior Maassluis under the cosh for the entire first 45 minutes, but were unable to translate that pressure into many goals.
Some of that was down to a lack of fortune in front of goal. Kermit Erasmus hit the inside of the post from close in, Kevin Hofland headed just over from a corner and the home keeper foiled Georginio Wijnaldum at the death, for example.
Feyenoord did manage three goals before the turnaround though and they were fine ones too. Diego Biseswar’s opener was the pick of the bunch. The youngster picked the ball up on the halfway line, before setting off on a solo run that took him past all-comers, including the keeper, and ended with him rolling the ball over the line.
Biseswar’s second strike of the evening required less individual class, but the build-up was no less attractive for all that. The game was half an hour old when Erasmus ran into space and onto an incoming ball. The South African made post-haste for the goal, neutralising the keeper with a sideway pass to Biseswar, who tapped in.
A minute earlier Michal Janota had had a little bit of fortune in netting the second. The Polish winger was played in by a clever through ball from Nicky Hofs, but did not appear to have the ball under control. A lack of sharpness by the keeper gave Janota the opportunity to force the ball over the line anyway.
After the break a completely new Feyenoord were better equipped to convert their chances. Within 20 minutes the Rotterdammers had doubled their lead. Leroy Fer tapped in the fourth just after the restart. The assist was for Michael Mols. Denny Landzaat got the next one with a placed drive, after which Ron Vlaar headed in the half dozen – his first of preseason.
Jon Dahl Tomasson then rattled a post in his first appearance since the game against FC Dordrecht but it was ultimately Luigi Bruins who got the final goal of the evening. The midfielder’s free kick was deflected out of the keeper’s reach to make it 7-0. Excelsior Maassluis – Feyenoord 0-7
