‘The confidence is back,’ said a satisfied Feyenoord head coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst on Friday afternoon, two days ...
Feyenoord lost their first serious game of preseason in Austria Tuesday. Real Mallorca were too strong in Wörgl, running out 0-2 winners. Arango scored both goals for the Primera Division outfit. The double strike came after Denny Landzaat missed a first-half penalty. Gertjan Verbeek rested his international contingent, while Karim El Ahmadi missed the game with some minor knocks.
Jon Dahl Tomasson threatened the Real Mallorca goal twice in the opening minutes. The first time the Dane rounded keeper Lux, but the ball raced out for a goal-kick before he could convert the chance.
The second time, Tomasson was not allowed to get his shot off, as Ramis brought him down from behind. Landzaat stepped up to take the resulting penalty, but his attempt went wide.
That was the most threatening Feyenoord would get. Real Mallorca were far and away the better side in the first 45. Georginio Wijnaldum cleared a Ramis header off the line, while Darley too was kept occupied. On 22 minutes he somehow kept Trejo’s shot out. The Spanish opener looked to be on the cards and it eventually came on the half-hour.
Darley found himself having to contend with two Mallorca players. Jurado, who not lone before had tested the keeper with a hard shot, left the ball for Arango. Darley did get a hand to the effort, but he had no chance with the rebound as Arango netted after all.
Valero had another chance on the stroke of half time, but the Brazilian keeper saved again. Feyenoord were doing little in the way of attacking themselves however. Leroy Fer had an attempt ahead of the break, but he was unable to keep his effort down. Later, he tried again from a free kick, but skied it again.
By that time however the Spaniards had a two-goal lead. Arango took advantage of the space he was ceded to bullet it the second just ahead of the hour mark. Diaz had an opportunity to make it three in the final minutes, but Darley managed to parry the ball out for a corner with an impressive reflex save.
