‘The confidence is back,’ said a satisfied Feyenoord head coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst on Friday afternoon, two days ...
Feyenoord beat amateur team Alphense Boys 7-2 in a friendly Thursday evening. Giovanni van Bronckhorst was the star man in Alphen aan den Rijn, netting twice and claiming two assists. Michael Mols and Nicky Hofs also grabbed a brace of goals each. Andwélé Slory scored the other Feyenoord strike.
Bert van Marwijk was reminded of an earlier confrontation with Alphense Boys pitch-side before kick-off. Feyenoord won that one 10-0 and the coach was asked whether his side would repeat the trick. Van Marwijk did not respond and that did not look unwise at half time, with Feyenoord just a goal to the good. More strikingly Henk Timmer had conceded two goals.
Feyenoord started with much promise. Van Bronckhorst scored the opener on 12 minutes. The ball was cleared but had already crossed the line. The skipper might have doubled his tally on 25 minutes, but he laid the ball off to the oncoming Michael Mols, who was in a better position, and it was the striker who netted.
Alphense Boys did not crumble however, getting a goal back within a few minutes. Patrick Kalkema scored with an unstoppable drive. Timmer would be beaten a second time before the break; this time by a great header by Moustafa Yachou. It brought the hosts back to within a goal of Feyenoord, who had just extended their lead though Mols, assisted again by Van Bronckhorst.
The enthusiastic amateurs were to find things harder going in the second half. Van Bronckhorst got his second within 120 seconds of the restart with a drive from distance. That broke the home side’s resolve and Feyenoord added two more around the hour-mark. The fifth came from Slory, who was played in by Jerson Anes Ribeiro; the six from Nicky Hofs, who punished some sloppy defending.
The surge was enough to put the game to bed and Van Marwijk used the opportunity to blood some youngsters – including Sanny Monteiro. An impressive move by Slory at the death gave Hofs the chance to grab the seventh goal of the evening.
