FEYENOORD STILL ON COURSE AFTER TOUGH QUARTERFINAL

Feyenoord saw off a spirited FC Zwolle at De Kuip in the cup Thursday night to book a semifinal tie against NAC Breda. Bert van Marwijk’s side took an early lead through Roy Makaay but the visitors fought back well to level through Tozé before the break. It took a late header from substitute Michael Mols to ease the Rotterdammers past their first division opponents.

Feyenoord started brightly and created a couple of early chances. Makaay was the first to test keeper Diederik Boer. The visitors’ keeper was up to the challenge though, repeating the trick when Luigi Bruins rattled in the rebound.

Unsurprisingly the opening goal didn’t take too long to arrive. Van Bronckhorst battled through the visitors’ defence but decided not to go for glory himself, laying the ball off the Makaay. The striker duly did his thing, driving Feyenoord into the lead.

The goal seemed to soothe the Rotterdammers and while they continued to push forward, they did so with less zeal. Hofland headed wide on 9 minutes. Nicky Hofs was dangerous too. The midfielder was unable to keep his shot down. Jonathan de Guzman also had a dig, but the Dutchman drove wide.

As the half wound down the first division team started to explore the land beyond the halfway line. Bram van Polen had the visitors’ first attempt on goal with 39 minutes on the clock. The second two minutes later was more successful though. Tozé ended a nicely worked move with a tap in at the far post, drawing Zwolle level.

The equaliser gave the visitors the confidence to push on. As a result, Zwolle were able to match Feyenoord in the second half. Jan Everse’s team sculptured the first chance after the break when Anton Jongsma was put in with only Timmer to beat. The home keeper saved the shot and Kevin Hofland scrambled the ball out for a corner. The danger had been averted but it brought audible grumbles from the stands.

Mols looked to have turned the tide within a minute of coming on. The game was just over an hour old when the striker netted with a fierce drive that keeper Boer managed to get a hand on but could not divert away from his goal. Unfortunately the goal was ruled out for offside.

Makaay was not flagged off ten minutes later when he raced on to a through ball, but he was unable to get his effort on target.

Feyenoord were having trouble finding their rhythm, but Mols capped a fine cameo performance by getting the home side out of jail with 8 minutes left. De Guzman broke down the right and played an inch-perfect pass into the substitute. Mols headed the cross firmly into the near corner for what proved to be the winner.
