Leroy Fer’s week just keeps getting better. The young midfielder, who made his debut for the first team last Sunday, signed a contract Thursday afternoon that will keep him at De Kuip for four and a half years. It’s a dream come true for the 17-year-old, who has been at the Varkenoord youth academy for nine years now. ‘This has been a really great week,’ beamed the youngster, who was joined for the occasion by his proud father Lesley.

The De Kuip crowd was introduced to the physically strong midfielder in Sunday’s win against Heracles Almelo. Fer made his debut as a consequence of the long injury list at the club. It was quite a step for a player that only moved up to the reserves a few weeks ago after strong performances in the A team. Everything is going so fast suddenly,’ admitted Fer, who is eighteen in January. ‘It feels special to sign my contract now. I’m enjoying it, but I realise this is just the beginning.’

Technical manager Peter Bosz was also quick to stress that the youngster still has everything to learn, although he acknowledged that Fer unquestionably has the talent. ‘You’re always uncertain how talented youngsters will develop, but I think Leroy can make it. He has the right mentality, is fairly complete and all-round technically and he can cover a lot of ground. It’s just starting for him.’
