Feyenoord suffered their second league defeat of the season Saturday in Enschede, going down 2-0 to FC Twente at the Arke Stadium. Blaise N’Kufo opened the hosts’ account before the break, while one-time Feyenoord player Stein Huysegems eased his new side out of reach in the second half in a game that Nicky Hofs was forced to miss with knee trouble.

The Rotterdammers found the going tough in the first half and will have been happy to get to the half-time whistle just a goal behind. Romano Denneboom put a warning shot across the visitors’ bows as early as the eighth minute. Timmer saved that effort, but he was unable to stop the home side from edging ahead just three minutes later. Neither Hofland nor Lucius responded adequately when N’Kufo rose to meet a cross and the Swiss striker was able to direct his header into the far corner for the opening goal.

Robbie Wielaert had even less opposition on 18 minutes when he rose to head unchallenged, but happily he didn’t do it very well, nodding wide. Timmer was obliged to act in response to Denneboom’s shot not long after, and again when Eljero Elia rattled in an effort, as the home side probed.

Feyenoord was being regularly pushed back in their own half, although they did create the odd chance themselves. On six minutes Makaay was caught off stride, preventing him from connecting cleanly with De Cler’s cross. Bruins was the only other Feyenoord player to threaten the home goal, rattling off two shots, both of which Boschker put out for a corner.

There was hope at the start of the second half when Jonathan de Guzman went ever so close to levelling things. The Canadian was just a few milliseconds late as he tried to power in a header and was unable to direct the ball where he wanted it. Fifty-five minutes in Makaay tried to make things difficult for Boschker, but the home keeper was up to the challenge.

Just as Feyenoord had seemingly started to believe that they could get something from the game however the pendulum swung. Luke Wilkshire played the ball in from the right, finding the unmarked Huysegems, who nodded home against his old club to give Twente a two-goal lead.

The strike forced Van Marwijk’s hand and the Feyenoord coach brought on Chun-Soo Lee with a half an hour to go.

Yet the next goal almost fell at the other hand. A quick break through Huysegems ended up at the feet of N’Kufo, who let rip, bringing a good save out of Timmer.

Van Marwijk threw on Michael Mols with about 20 minutes left, but although the visitors pushed for an opening, they were missing the killer punch. Mols did have a big chance in the final minute, but he was unable to steer his drive out of the reaches of Boschker.
