VLAAR SIDELINED FOR AT LEAST THREE MONTHS

An MRI scan has shown that Ron Vlaar tore his cruciate knee ligament in Sunday’s win at Roda JC. The news means that the defender will be unavailable for selection at least three to four months. Vlaar will initially be forced to give the knee some rest in combination with a course of physiotherapy. Feyenoord’s medical staff took the decision not to book Vlaar in for surgery, preferring to wait and see how the injury develops and whether the knee starts to heal properly. If Vlaar does ultimately undergo an operation, rehab will be twice as long. The need for surgery normally becomes apparent after six weeks or so.

Vlaar was injured in a tussle with Yulu Matondo five minutes before the break in Sunday’s game. The provisional diagnosis in the dressing room was that Vlaar had damaged his cruciate ligament, which was confirmed by Monday’s scan.
