Danny Buijs and Feyenoord agreed terms Wednesday evening on the player’s transfer to De Kuip, after the club agreed a deal with FC Groningen. Provided he passes a medical Thursday, the 24-year-old right midfielder will put his signature to a three-season contract, with an option on an extra year. Buijs is a product of Feyenoord’s Varkenoord youth academy, but he made his breakthrough at Excelsior and FC Groningen. ‘I’m returning to my first love and it’s a dream come true. This is a brilliant feeling.’

Danny Buijs was voted player of the season in Groningen last year and he was one of the main tormentors when Feyenoord went down 3-0 at the Euroborg stadium at the start of this season. Buijs is delighted with his return to Rotterdam, although he is sad to leave FC Groningen, where he became such a favourite in two years there. ‘It is very tough for me to leave FC Groningen,’ says Buijs. ‘I was very much at home and the club has fantastic supporters who gave me two great seasons. But everyone who knows me even a little knows that it was always me biggest dream to return to Feyenoord. I’ve never hidden that fact in Groningen. I was in the Feyenoord youth setup for ten years and in the crowd at De Kuip every two weeks. I am really happy that I am finally getting the opportunity to return for the first team. You might get a chance like that once in your life.’
Buijs knows the role he has been brought to Feyenoord for. A right back as a youth, he has turned himself into a right midfielder. ‘All things being equal I’m coming as a midfielder. But it’s down to me whether I play. I have to force things and that’s how it should be. I’m really looking forward to it.’
