Preseason 2006/07 was officially launched Saturday morning when Feyenoord’s fans visited the traditional first day of training. The event attracted thousands of fans again this year. Even the absence of fans’ favourite Dirk Kuyt couldn’t dampen the spirit of the supporters. Kuyt and Karim Saidi both missed the day and they will also be absent next week, after being given an extra week off to compensate their World Cup efforts.
By just before eleven every seat in the specially erected stands alongside the training pitch was full of expectant fans, many of them with banners and even more proudly wearing the club’s new jersey. Fans had started to queue outside the Fanship early in the morning for the chance to secure the season’s new home and away tops. As per traditional, the players completed morning training in the home shirt, changing to the away shirt for the afternoon session.
The first to emerge from the dressing rooms was John Metgod, followed by Christian Gyan and Pieter Collen. It wasn’t long before the fans got a glimpse of the new signings, who were clearly impressed by the welcome. Even Theo Lucius, who isn’t exactly unaccustomed to the limelight, was visibly taken aback by the huge turnout. Joonas Kolkka was clearly enjoying himself, as were many others, including Ron Vlaar. It was a new experience for the talented young defender, who won the Under-21 European Championships was Holland this summer, as he moved to Feyenoord last year when the season was already in full swing.
Despite appearances by youngsters Sammuel and Jeffrey Altheer, it was the experienced Patrick Paauwe who caught the eye the most, with his new blond look.
