The extension to Erwin Koeman’s contract can be seen as an important milestone with respect to the stability of the coaching regime at De Kuip. At the press conference called to announce the deal, Koeman expressed his expectation that his staff of Duut, Metgod, Doesburg and Regnault would continue to assist him in the future. ‘We have proven to be a good team. It’s important for me that we can continue to work in this way.’
Erwin Koeman was approached about a new deal back as early as November. ‘Wim Jansen asked me at the time whether I was willing to think about extending my contract. My first response at the time was that I found it too early. But when Feyenoord indicated that it wanted to bring stability to the club in doing that, I quickly developed a positive feeling. I too feel that stability is very important in the process we now find ourselves in. What’s more, from day one I have worked at this club with a great deal of pleasure. The fact that Feyenoord wanted to extend at this early stage means that there is a lot of confidence in me. That is pleasant.’
Koeman is also realistic about what his new contract means. ‘I know that both Feyenoord and I will be looked at more critically than is currently the case. But we have to continue with what we have stared. We will have to continue to pursuit the recognisability that Feyenoord now has. The aim is to climb up step by step.’
‘The expectations were not so high this season,’ explained Jorien van den Herik. Feyenoord have surprised everyone by being in contention for the title for so long. There were a number of reasons for that. First and foremost there is a calmness around the place, a condition of good performances on the work floor. In addition, the players have started respecting, accepting and appreciating each other again. They have grown together, which has created a close-knit team. I hear from the coach that the team could be more professional, but also that there are opportunities for growth. This coach has proven that he is able to handle the players’ group in the right way and get the best out of it. That is why we are very happy that we have been able to contract him for a longer period. Our intention is to keep the whole group together; that goes for the squad and the technical staff. A good start has been made on that today.’
