NICKY HOFS GETS FIRST DUTCH CAP

National coach Marco van Basten has named Nicky Hofs in his Dutch squad to play Ecuador Wednesday at the Amsterdam Arena. Hofs gets his first international cap in a squad that also includes fellow Feyenoord players Ron Vlaar, Dirk Kuyt and Romeo Castelen. Just back from a five-month layoff due to injury, Hofs was surprised but delighted at the news. ‘This is a dream come true; I’ve been looking forward to his since I was a little boy.’

‘What I’ve experienced these past few weeks is almost unbelievable,’ admitted Hofs. ‘It really gives me a double kick, especially when I think back to the difficult times.’

The full squad: Henk Timmer (AZ) and Edwin van der Sar (Manchester United), Urby Emanuelson (Ajax), Tim de Cler, Kew Jaliens, Joris Mathijsen and Barry Opdam (all AZ), Giovanni van Bronckhorst (Barcelona), Ron Vlaar (Feyenoord) and Khalid Boulahrouz (HSV), Hedwiges Maduro (Ajax), Denny Landzaat (AZ), Mark van Bommel (Barcelona), Nicky Hofs (Feyenoord), George Boateng (Middlesbrough) and Phillip Cocu (PSV), Martijn Meerdink (AZ), Arjen Robben (Chelsea), Romeo Castelen, Dirk Kuyt (both Feyenoord), Ruud van Nistelrooy (Manchester United) and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink (PSV).
