Erwin Koeman’s men had to do with a point when Roda JC held Feyenoord to their second home goalless draw of the season Sunday. The dropped points mean that the Rotterdammers are now three points behind leaders PSV and dead-level with fellow chasers AZ. Yet there were chances for Feyenoord to win the game, especially in the second half, were it not for a fine display by visiting keeper Asjel Kujovic. The match marked the return of Romeo Castelen and Nicky Hofs, while Ron Vlaar made his home debut.

Feyenoord started with promise. The game was nine-minutes old when Kuyt sprinted in on goal, but with Castelen in an offside position, the international was forced to go it alone and Pa-Modou Kah’s leg was enough to frustrate him. It earned the defender a yellow card when a red might have been warranted. Two minutes later Patrick Paauwe had an opportunity to put his side in front when he received from Sebastián Pardo, but Paauwe was unable to get the ball fully under control and his shot went over.
That would be the last threatening attack of the first half from the Rotterdammers, who were finding it increasingly difficult to find each other. Roda JC sensed it and there followed a ten-minute spell in which the visitors tried their luck no fewer than four times. While the efforts were not always well directed and the crowd only found their hearts in their mouth once – when Sekou Cissé put Adres Oper’s ball millimetres wide – it was clear that control was moving away from the home side. The Maassiders did manage one chance of their own before half time however, when Kalou skipped past two defenders and shot, but his attempt went wide.
After the break, the optimism returned as quick as it had disappeared. Sebastián Pardo stayed in the dressing room and his place was taken by Hofs, who thus made his first appearance of the season after tearing his cruciate ligament in preseason. The return was warmly welcomed by the fans, as Feyenoord took the initiative again. Roda JC were pushed back and the home side almost got the breakthrough on 54 minutes. Kuyt intercepted a loose pass, setting up Kalou, who beat his marker and rattled in a shot that Kujovic managed to get in the way of.
Not long after Kuyt had a shot of his own, but Kujovic was not caught off guard by the striker’s speed. Kuyt did get the ball past the visiting keeper a little later, only to see it ruled out for offside.
Feyenoord continued to have the upper hand, but were unable to create many clear openings. There was an appeal for a penalty when Kah appeared to bring down substitute Diego Biseswar, but referee Luinge decided there was no charge to answer to.
Then Hofs went close to completing a dream comeback, but Kujovic was again up to the task. At the other end Lodewijks was called into action for the first time since the turnaround when Vincent Lachambre’s launched a rasping drive, but the experienced Lodewijks got up to keep the ball out of the net.
Supported by the faithful legion Feyenoord continued to look for the breakthrough and Hofs went close with a free kick but ultimately the game ended goalless.
