As the big match against PSV gets ever nearer Erwin Koeman is determined to keep his squad focused on matters in hand. The most immediate matter is Saturday evening’s trip to RBC. The hosts have garnered only three points from 13 starts this season and everyone expects the Rotterdammers to take all three points, but the Feyenoord coach is having none of it. ‘I am not interested in that. It might be that we find it harder against RBC than against PSV next week. You win titles against RBC, not against PSV.’
Koeman has the requisite concerns ahead of the game down near the Belgian border. Dirk Kuyt’s thigh may yet keep him out of the tussle. He’ll be given a fitness test Saturday. The striker is expected to make it though, after training with the rest of the group Friday morning.
Serginho Greene on the other hand is less certain to make the cut. The defender has a problem with his hip, which forced him to leave training early Thursday and Friday. Bearing in mind Karim Saidi’s unavailability, Koeman is left with a dearth of defenders, so Christian Gyan may make his first start of the season in central defence.
Further up field, Romeo Castelen will definitely miss the game. The forward is still troubled by his hamstring and he will be replaced by Ali Boussaboun. There is better news on Patrick Paauwe, who is available again after serving out his suspension.
RBC have not started the season well, but Koeman is not expecting anything but highly motivated opponents. ‘Precisely because of the difficult situation they find themselves in.’ That said, the coach does not feel that his team will lack any motivation. ‘I cannot believe that the players will take things lightly. Based on the efforts in training I think that’ll be okay. I really have the idea that we will win there comfortably.’
Shinji Ono trained with the rest of the group Friday, but he will not be in named in Koeman’s squad. ‘This was the first time he has trained with the group. He is not yet match fit and he has to be careful in tackles,’ explained the coach, who brought Pieter Collen back into his squad during the week.
