Feyenoord made it three wins in a three matches with a win against FC Emmen on Sunday, leaving head coach Giovanni van Bron...
Sunday finds Feyenoord in Enschede for a lunch-time kick-off against FC Twente in what is the start of a challenging week for Erwin Koeman and his charges. The coach for one is looking forward to learning a lot from Enschede, Bucharest and Utrecht, ‘because it’s interesting to see which players will cope during three tough matches.’ FC Twente have had a so-so start to the season. ‘But that won’t help us,’ says Koeman. ‘That will just make them give 110% to turn things around.’
The coach will be pleased to welcome back Shinji Ono, who came on as substitute in last week’s thumping of Heerenveen. ‘He appears to be in good physical condition and he looks fit,’ says Koeman. ‘It’s nice to have Ono with us, because he’s a player that doesn’t hide and likes to have the ball. He adds football and he can slow things down when need be. He certainly strengthens the team.’
That’s something that Feyenoord could use, because in spite of five straight wins there’s still room for improvement. The poor first half against Heerenveen is exhibit A. ‘I wasn’t happy about that at all,’ admits the coach. ‘If things aren’t going well a player always has to try to get a C. A lot of the players failed to do so in the first half. You cannot then go looking for excuses. There are excuses, but doing so just makes you weaker. In the second half we did do well, but the first half showed that we’re not there yet.’
There was good news for Serginho Greene this week, as the defender was called into Marco van Basten’s provision Dutch squad for the first time. Koeman was not surprised by the move based on Van Basten’s selection policy. ‘Things have gone really fast for Serginho, although that doesn’t make it any less fantastic for him. Serginho is a lad with a hunger to learn and he’s passionate too, which is an advantage.’
Against FC Twente Koeman will have to do without Alfred Schreuder, Cory Gibbs, Nicky Hofs, Christian Gyan and Patrick Mtiliga, who all ruled out by injury. Tim Vincken returns to the squad, but may have to take his seat in the dugout. Salomon Kalou is suffering from a thigh strain, but it is unlikely to keep him out. The Ivorian hooked back up with the rest of the squad for Saturday training and a decision will be put on hold until Koeman and his staff judge how well Kalou is holding up.
