Feyenoord drew their last preseason friendly in Schijndel Saturday after conceding an equaliser deep into time added-on. Timothy Derijck opened the scoring for the Rotterdammers and Ali Boussaboun added the second after the break from the spot in a game in which trialist Japanese Sota Hirayama played the full ninety minutes. After a month on the sidelines, Pascal Bosschaart and Boussaboun each played a half, while Tim Vincken and Nicky Hofs both retired injured.
The Japanese was a little unsure before the break, but he clearly showed the quality that Koeman feels he has. Hirayama regularly came out on top in one-on-ones and his awareness of team-mates was also apparent. Indeed, the trialist almost capped his performance with a goal, rifling a shot inches past the post on 18.
A couple of minutes earlier Hirayama had also been involved in a great chance that should have ended in a goal, but Pardo was unable to keep his shot down. By that time, the game was already at 1-1. Derijck had given Feyenoord an early lead, heading in a cross from Hofs, but four minutes later Schijndel levelled things up again when Peter van den Heuvel nutmegged Aerts to score.
The goal gave the home side confidence and suddenly Feyenoord found themselves in a tussle. The visitors did threaten through Vincken (drive just wide) and Hofs, who should have had a penalty just before half time, but in the end the sides went in all square at the break.
Schijndel’s second wind was all but blown out in the second half however as Feyenoord took the game by the scruff of the neck and denied their opponents any meaningful possession. That said, the Maassiders were unable to put the home goal under threat, save a Boussaboun shot.
The lead looked imminent when Vincken was brought down in the area and the referee pointed spot-wards. But Pardo notched up a second miss of the match, powering his effort over the bar.
Vincken earned a second penalty on 69 minutes however, after passing two defenders down the left. This time Boussaboun stepped up to convert and hand his side the lead. The goal appeared enough for the professionals, and they would pay the price for their lack of drive at the death, when Pieter Kuijpers snatched a second for Schijndel to get his side a draw.
