Salomon Kalou has been awarded the Johan Cruyff Prize for Young Player of the Year. The Ivorian was selected by a panel of twelve leading coaches, including Marco van Basten, Johan Cruyff and Guus Hiddink. Besides a statue of Cruyff, the player also receives a ‘Cruyff Court’, a public area where youngsters can practice their ball skills. The player still has to decide on a location for the Salomon Kalou Field, as it will be known.
‘It is an honour to be voted best young player,’ admits Kalou. ‘I don’t know where I will have the field built. I’ll have to give it some thought, but maybe in Ivory Coast. It is a very nice prize.’
It’s the third time the prize has been awarded. The previous winners were Arjen Robben (2003) and Wesley Sneijder (2004).
