Feyenoord earned their third Johan Cruijff Shield win in their history in Eindhoven on Saturday evening. Head coach Giovann...
The curtain goes down on the season at De Kuip Sunday when ADO Den Haag visit. It’s been a testing campaign for the Maassiders and Ruud Gullit will be happy to put it behind him. ‘I’m glad it’s over, especially bearing in mind the last few matches,’ says the coach who is fired up to end on a high note. He’ll have to do it without the suspended Nicky Hofs and may also be without Östlund, Bosschaart, Pardo and De Graaf, who are all suffering from injuries.
Next season’s squad was up for discussion at the Friday press call. The last game of the season is the last opportunity for the players to regain some pride after three defeats on the bounce. But then: ‘We’ll then be really able to concentrate on next season,’ confirms the coach. ‘I have decided who will go and who will stay. The players will hear that soon. When I talk about reinforcements I look where we need it. The team that played well until the game against PSV is the gauge. Not the team that lost the last few matches. Based on the shortcomings of the team that did well then, we want to strengthen. Whether certain players will leave I don’t know, I cannot look in their heads. They are interested in what we the technical staff are going to do in the transfer market. That’s a reason to hurry, but not to over hurry ourselves.’
There are a number of imponderables going into the game. Edwin de Graaf is very unlikely to start after missing the last few days’ training with a muscle strain. Pascal Bosschaart (hamstring) and Sebastián Pardo (groin) are also very doubtful, although they have both returned to training. Otherwise Alexander Östlund’s presence will be touch and go until the last moment. He trained Thursday, but was missing a day later with a groin problem. ‘I don’t know if he’ll make it Sunday. We’ll find out Saturday,’ said Gullit.
