A point was all Feyenoord could secure in a rare goalless draw in Enschede Saturday evening in the Eredivisie. It was perhaps all they really deserved too, considering it was the home side that looked like the team most likely to take all three points after the break. That didn’t happen however, thanks for the most part to a fine display by Feyenoord goalie Gabor Babos, who saved his side on a number of occasions.
Ruud Gullit showed confidence in the team that earned a cup victory at AZ in midweek, with Sebastián Pardo stepping in for the suspended Nicky Hofs. That meant that Danko Lazovic and Bruno Basto retained their places and the Portuguese defender showed how valuable he can be within eight minutes.
Blaise N´Kufo cut into the area from the left before unleashing a powerful shot that took ended up striking the bar and it was Basto who was on hand to clear from the line.
That was the home side’s best opportunity of the first half, as Feyenoord controlled the first forty-five. The first chance for the visitors had come after four minutes, when Twente keeper Boschker scrambled away Karim Saidi’s goal-bound header.
Unfortunately there wouldn’t be a lot more by way of goalmouth action in the first period. Dirk Kuyt threatened to break the deadlock when his shot took a rebound at one end, and N´Kufo almost punished the visitors when Saidi slipped at the other, but Babos was up to the challenge.
The pattern of the match changed little after the teams switched ends after the break, and Feyenoord had little trouble keeping solo striker N´Kufo in check.
The first chance came with almost twenty-five minutes of the second half played. Jason Culina broke clear of Basto on the right and whipped in a shot that Babos blocked with his feet.
The home side took fresh hope from that, and within a minute Culina had had a second shot parried by Babos.
Gullit decided to try to break the home side’s hold by introducing Gerson Magrao on the leaf for captain Bart Goor, but FC Twente continued to push Feyenoord back. Inspired by some hefty support from the stands Simon Cziommer had two chances in short succession, but Babos was up to the challenge both times.
The Hungarian keeper kept his side in the game again not much later when N´Kufo drove in an effort of his own.
In the end Feyenoord kept their feet and almost grabbed a surprise win as the match wound down when Danko Lazovic found himself in space in the box, but he was unable to direct his header out of reach of host keeper Boschker.
