Feyenoord suffered a defeat in its opening Maspalomas Cup game in Gran Canaria Sunday, eventually going down 2-4 to Bundesliga club Bayern Leverkusern. Lazovic and Kuyt got the Feyenoord goals in a match that also marked the debut in a red and white shirt of De Graaf on the right of midfield and American trialist Gibbs in the heart of the defence. The game also marked the return of keeper Gabor Babos and midfielder Sebastian Pardo. Other new faces Bahia and Bandalovski were held in reserve however.
Pardo played in a controlling midfield role, making a cautious return to first-team football, but the same cannot be said for Danko Lazovic, who replaced Kalou and looked keen to grab his chance.
Handed a start after first-choice Kalou was ruled out with a hamstring problem, Lazovic was hungry, but he had the bad luck to be part of a team that showed few striking ambitions in the first half.
He did have a chance to open the scoring for the Maassiders, but his effort was unsuccessful. By that time Leverkusen had already opened their account, through Bervatov, who pounced to net the rebound when Kryznoiwek’s long-range effort rattled off the post.
Five minutes before halftime Bervatov repeated the trick, grabbing goal number two after a one-two with Robson.
Bart Goor almost got one back for Feyenoord before the break, as his shot crashed against the aluminium too, but there were to be no rebounds netted this time.
In the end Feyenoord didn’t get on the score sheet until after the break and it was Danko Lazovic who pulled the goal back for the Rotterdammers. Unfortunately, in less than two minutes the Germans had reasserted their control over the game with a third strike, this time by Voronin.
There was more fire in Feyenoord bellies in the second half, despite the lack of any new faces in the eleven, and the flames were not choked by that third Leverkusen goal.
The reward came on 53, when Dirk Kuyt pulled his side within striking distance again with the second Feyenoord goal of the afternoon.
But on the hour the Germans grabbed their fourth to put the game out of reach, Voronin netting his second despite a suspicion of offside.
By that time Gullit has brought on Mtiliga and Castelen for Bosschaart and De Graaf. Soon after he also brought in Magrao for Kuyt, but the day’s scoring had been completed by then.
Feyenoord’s next opponents will be Norwegian champions Rosenborg early Tuesday evening.
