GIBBS ON TRIAL

American international Cory Gibbs has jetted into De Kuip for a two-week trial. The central defender—currently contracted to MLS-club Dallas Burn—has some experience in Europe after a stint at Sankt Pauli, but two relegations for the Hamburgers ended the player’s German adventure.

‘Gibbs caught our eye during the international between Holland and the United States in March 2004,’ explained Technical Director Mark Wotte.

‘But we’ve scouted him on other occasions too. He is a central defender who can play on the left or the right, so he could be interesting.’

The Florida-born Gibbs started out in midfield, but only really started to break through when he moved back into defence and he recently picked up his ninth cap for his homeland. At 1.91 metres (6 foot 3) Gibbs is strong in the air and a good man-marker.

The 24-year-old is set to travel with the first-team squad to the Canary Island camp.
