Feyenoord trained in the Ferenc Puskas stadium for the first time Wednesday evening, with the playing surface in particular drawing a warm compliment from coach Gullit. ‘What a wonderful pitch. It’s at times like these I really get the itch to play myself.’ Assistant coach Petrovic agreed, and in doing so appeared to throw down the gauntlet to his team. ‘You simply cannot have a bad game on a pitch like this. It’s just impossible,’ the Montenegrin laughed.
Gullit and Petrovic are set to field their strongest eleven against the Budapest outfit. ‘Ferencvaros are a strong team, a good collective. We will have to be fully concentrated and particular ensure we get through the first twenty minutes alright,’ admitted Gullit. The coach has been pleased with the response he’s had from his players after Sunday’s heavy defeat in Alkmaar. But Gullit did point up a need to handle dead ball situations with more aplomb.
‘I find it very frustrating,’ admitted Gullit. ‘Especially as it’s down to a lack of concentration. It shows that people are not doing what they should be doing. That’s annoying. If everyone does what he’s supposed to and it goes wrong then it’s probably time to change things. But when it happens because people are asleep it’s very irritating.’
