Brazilian defender André Bahia signed a contract with Feyenoord Wednesday afternoon that means the left-sided twenty-year-old will be plying his trade in Rotterdam from 1 January 2005. The deal brings Bahia to De Kuip until the end of the season, with an option on an extra four years. ‘This is a safe construction for us,’ explained Technical Director Mark Wotte. ‘The arrival of Bahia means that we have two players for each position this season, which was our intention.’
André Luis Bahia dos Santos Viana doesn’t turn 21 until November, but he already has a wealth of experience. ‘He’s played over 80 games in the first team of Flamengo and has several youth caps’, continued Wotte. ‘Bahia adds strength in depth to the squad and has the opportunity to prove himself behind Paauwe.’
Bahia trained with the squad Wednesday afternoon after a two-day trial. ‘I’m proud of it,’ said Bahia of the switch. ‘In Brazil everyone who loves football knows Feyenoord, Ajax and PSV. I’m happy that I will be able to show what I can do here. Feyenoord is a fantastic club to get used to European football and become a great footballer.’
The player is clear about his own qualities. ‘I’m a real defender who uses his strength in the tackles. I also sometimes go forward and get the odd goal.’
