RUUD HAPPY TO PLAY BOXING DAY

Ruud Gullit has expressed his support for the proposal of the Eredivisie to schedule matches on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day starting next season. ‘You couldn’t make me happier,’ laughed the coach. ‘I hate those Sundays after Christmas. They do it in England too. The winter break is a disruption. I’d rather be in a full stadium on Boxing Day than having to watch the Philharmonic Orchestra the whole day and I think many supporters feel the same way.’

The Feyenoord coach is less delighted with other Eredivisie initiatives, especially a European playoff for the teams finishing second through fifth. ‘It cannot be that it no longer matters whether you finish second or fifth. Perhaps the second-placed team should be given an advantage. And you’ll see that there’s a lot less competition near the end of the season. There is often a gap between fifth place and the rest, so you’ll see clubs resting players ahead of the playoffs. I would anyway. That’s not fair to the clubs that are fighting relegation. We all have to think about how we can come to the best arrangement.’
